Professional teeth clean at the dentist

Getting your teeth cleaned at the dentist is an important part of maintaining your oral health. Many people might ask why you’d need to get the dentist to conduct a procedure as simple as cleaning your teeth. The fact is that a toothbrush simply can’t do what a dentist or dental hygienist can.

Professional cleaning removes the build-up of calcified plaque—also called tartar or calculus—that accumulates over time and becomes impossible to remove with a toothbrush at home. This solid material can have the consistency of concrete and is just as difficult to shift. It is really hard to clean off, so it’s not the sort of cleaning you can do without the professional tools a dentist uses to clean teeth.

During the cleaning process, all the plaque on your teeth will gently be chipped away. This procedure leaves your teeth nice and sparkling clean and may also help to prevent other dental treatments down the track.

The process of getting your teeth cleaned at the dentist

Our dentists use a special tooth-cleaning scaler for teeth cleaning. It distributes water over the teeth and vibrates as it passes over the teeth— washes the teeth as it scales. The walls of the barriers around the gum are broken where the teeth meet the gum tissue. That’s where all the tartar accumulates.  Every single tooth is carefully treated with the scaler.

After this is done, the cleaning process is almost complete. Each and every tooth is manually checked to ensure it is free of build-up and then flossing is done between the teeth before they are polished. We use a special polishing attachment with a polishing paste to smooth the tooth surfaces. This not only gives your teeth a clean, shiny appearance but also helps to remove minor surface stains, making your smile brighter. Next, fluoride is applied to your teeth to strengthen them.

After leaving our practice, you’ll feel like you’ve had a spa treatment for your teeth—they will feel absolutely clean, smooth and fresh.

Brushing and flossing still matter!

While getting your teeth cleaned at the dentist is an important part of your dental check-up, that doesn’t mean you can forget about twice-daily brushing and regular flossing of your teeth.

While a professional teeth clean offers a result that can’t be achieved at home, brushing and flossing are still an essential part of your daily oral hygiene routine. By combining a teeth clean at the dentist twice a year, and at-home oral care, you can enjoy a healthy smile and prevent dental problems effectively.

Pregnancy and your oral health

There are two hormones that are very active during pregnancy - estrogen and progesterone. The surge of these hormone levels leads to an increase in the overall blood circulation throughout the body, causing the gums to receive more blood than they need. This sometimes causes an increase in gingivitis, swollen or bleeding gums.

Pregnant women are also at an increased risk of developing gum disease due to the body's altered response to bacteria. Maintaining a regular oral hygiene routine - including brushing, flossing, and professional dental cleanings - is crucial during pregnancy to prevent gum disease.

Gum disease: Why is it a major concern?
Man with gum pain

Many patients are surprised to learn that it is gum disease - and not tooth decay - that is the major cause of tooth loss. This is because it can cause serious damage to the soft tissue and bones in your mouth, which are essential in supporting your teeth.

Gum disease is often called gingivitis in its early, easily reversible stage. As it advances, it becomes periodontal disease.

What is the main cause of gum disease?

Plaque stands out as the primary cause of this oral health problem. Plaque is a film of bacteria that forms on the surface of your teeth every day, particularly along the gumline and ...
