Gum disease: Why is it a major concern?

Many patients are surprised to learn that it is gum disease - and not tooth decay - that is the major cause of tooth loss. This is because it can cause serious damage to the soft tissue and bones in your mouth, which are essential in supporting your teeth.

Gum disease is often called gingivitis in its early, easily reversible stage. As it advances, it becomes periodontal disease.

What is the main cause of gum disease?

Plaque stands out as the primary cause of this oral health problem. Plaque is a film of bacteria that forms on the surface of your teeth every day, particularly along the gumline and between teeth. This can lead to gum disease (as well as cavities) if not removed through regular brushing of your teeth and flossing.

How do you know if you have gum disease?

The first sign that you might have gum disease is the appearance of blood when you brush your teeth or floss.

Some of the other main symptoms of gum disease include:

  1. Formation of deep pockets in between your gums and teeth
  2. Red gums that are tender and swollen
  3. Bad breath and taste
  4. Loose teeth
  5. Receding gums
  6. Changes in how your teeth fit together when biting down

Even if you don’t see any of these symptoms, regular dental check-ups are important so your dentist can assess your dental health. Gum disease can progress painlessly quite quickly without showing any obvious signs. This happens even in the latter stages of the disease.

What puts you at risk of gum disease?

The risk factors for gum disease include:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Genetics
  • Chewing or smoking tobacco
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Crooked teeth
  • Certain types of medications

Treating gum disease

Apart from tooth loss, untreated gum disease can be damaging to your overall health. Medical research studies have found links to a range of other health issues including heart disease, diabetes, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis and premature birth. The reasons for the link with these health conditions are not yet well understood but experts believe the bacteria in the mouth enters the bloodstream, causing inflammation and damage to other organs.

Paying regular visits to the dentist is important to avoid gum disease becoming a serious issue. They are best placed to detect even the very early forms of gingivitis and can then measure the extent of the problem and start treatment.
