Children's Dentistry & Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

Family life comes with a lot of responsibilities but also many privileges. One thing families get to share is a sense of togetherness, a perk with added value. Doing things together strengthens bonds of kinship, but it also enhances affordability. It drives things like family trips, family traditions, and family festivals.

Your family’s dental care is no exception. In fact, research shows that parents with better oral health practices have children with better teeth. So the perspective at The Dentists @ Belmore is that good dentistry is most effectively done family-style.

Our Approach to Children Is Warm and Nurturing

Whether your children are older, of various ages, or have just come into the world, our dentists are qualified and excited to treat them. Our team is well-suited to managing your children’s unique dental needs in a caring and fun way.

Ages One to Three, We Make It Fun and Stress-Free

We’re committed to helping you give them the healthiest possible start for the youngest children. We can advise you on how to care for your child’s first teeth, and we recommend their first dental experience be a ‘fun visit’, a chance to ride in the chair and explore our tools to break down the fear of seeing the dentist. Then where possible, our dentists will gently monitor their early tooth development to identify potential issues.

Because our goal is to establish your child’s positive relationship with dental care, we encourage you to bring them to your routine check-ups and cleans so you can model good behaviour and, in the process, enhance your dental health as well.

Ages Three and Older We Care for Front Teeth and Molars

When your child has a mouthful of new baby teeth, our team will ensure they are clean and healthy. At this stage, kids are pliable, so we give you strategies to make their brushing and flossing routine a life-long practice. We also will emphasise positive dietary habits, avoiding sugary drinks and other foods that turbo-charge tooth decay.

Regular checkups and gentle cleanings should continue for your children as they grow, twice each year unless Dr Ibrahim would recommend more frequency, including preventive treatments as an extra line of defence in your child’s trouble areas.

Preventive Dental Care for Growing Teeth

By your child’s sixth birthday, permanent teeth will begin to replace their baby teeth. The Dentists @ Belmore team may suggest treatments like fluoride varnishes and dental sealants to protect both kinds of teeth.

Fluoride is a natural mineral that experts have observed working against tooth decay. This decay is caused by acid-excreting bacteria that eat away at your tooth enamel. Fluoride reverses that impact by rebuilding the minerals in damaged tooth surfaces.

We apply dental sealants because, like fluoride, they have a protective quality. We use sealants for freshly cleaned teeth, targeting the trouble spots like hard-to-reach areas or the deep grooves of your molars. This material flows like a liquid, thoroughly coating tooth surfaces. Dental sealants are safe because they wear away over time, but you can extend their protective effects with a reapplication.

Bulk-billed (no out of pocket) Dental Care for Eligible Children Aged 2 – 17 Years Old

Child Dental Benefits Scheme | Advanced Dental Group

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule, or CDBS, is an Australian Federal Government program that was created to make dental care more accessible to families who receive certain government benefits.

It provides benefits for general dental services to children aged between 2 and 17. An estimated 3.4 million children across the country meet the eligibility criteria and will be able to access the benefits each year.

Call us today and we can check your child's eligibility over the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Patient safety is an integral part of our care at the Dentists @ Belmore in Sydney, NSW. This commitment extends from the treatment room to our diagnostic technology.

Our Dental Clinic Maintains Exemplary Standards

In terms of cleanliness, we use the highest level of infection prevention standards. Every one of our instruments undergoes a rigorous disinfection process and is sealed in a labelled bag to allow systemised tracking. We also use barriers over the dental chair and use hospital-grade disinfectants to clean the chair between patients. Our team members undergo frequent updates in better standards and practices, and we use Australian-made products wherever available.

Dental Technology for Safe Treatments

Many of our dental technology upgrades are to enhance your health and safety as a Dentists @ Belmore patient. For example, we now are using a leading-edge x-ray called OPGs (orthopantomogram). This type of dental x-ray produces a full panoramic-type dental x-ray of your upper and lower teeth in one image. In addition, these machines emit less radiation and show a complete view without multiple scans.

We encourage you to learn more about how our focus on health and safety can make a difference in your life. We are always welcoming new patients from the communities around Belmore, including Canterbury, Lakemba, and Clemton Park.

It is generally recommended to start taking them to the dentist when their first tooth comes through or by 12 months, whichever comes first. Whilst no treatment may be performed then, this is a good strategy to get kids used to seeing the dentist. At that first appointment, our dentists will discuss strategies to maintain your child's oral hygiene and health in an easy and non-threatening way. The first time our young patients come in, they often sit in their parents' lap for a joy ride in the dental chair!

Here's some more info from the Australian Dental Association.

The total dental benefit is capped at $1,132 per child over two years and to access the benefits, certain eligibility criteria need to be met. If the full amount is not spent in the first year, it is carried over into the second year. Any funds not used by the end of the second year are forfeited.

Before beginning any work, your dentist will take time to inform you of the costs of any treatment so that you can spend your allowance effectively. We choose to bulk-bill on the spot through Medicare, up to the child’s benefit allowance.

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a federal government program that was introduced to make dentistry more accessible to children up to the age of eighteen. Many children meet the eligibility criteria, and this scheme is under-utilised.

Parents that hold a Medicare card can simply call us up and ask that we check their child’s eligibility.

The Child Dental Benefit Scheme covers a range of basic dental services including routine checks, fillings, fissure sealing, x-rays, root canal treatments and extractions. The government has provided itemised codes for the treatments that are covered by the CDBS here.

It’s important to note that services classified as ‘high-end’ are not covered by the CDBS. This includes orthodontic or surgical work and cosmetic dental work.
